Peter F. McCloskey, President

Pete McCloskey, past head of the Electronics Industries Alliance (EIA), became president in July of 2006 of the National Science & Technology Education Partnership (NSTEP). Expanding his role as Chairman Emeritus, he is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of NSTEP. His vision was to create a program that used the power of the internet to connect volunteer tutors with struggling students for tutoring and homework help.  Mr. McCloskey spent his entire career in electronics, beginning in research and transitioning to the business side. He worked in the manned and unmanned space program for IBM and later became president of Farrington Electronics. He joined the association world as president of the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturer Association (CBEMA, now ITI). He then spent 22 years as the president of the Electronic Industries Alliance and Chairman of the Electronic Industries Foundation (now NSTEP), becoming Chairman Emeritus in 1999.

Mr. McCloskey holds a law degree from Fordham University and is a member of the Bars of Virginia and the Supreme Court. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Holy Cross College and was an officer in the Marine Corps during the Lebanon Conflict.  In 1982, President Reagan appointed Mr. McCloskey to the Peace Corps Advisory Council.  In addition to numerous other honors and awards, he was a recipient of the American Society of Association Executives Key Award in 1995 and the Electronic Industries’ Medal of Honor in 1998.

Mr. McCloskey is married to the former Louise Collins and has four children and fourteen grandchildren.

 

 

Julie Cox, Vice President

Julie Cox became the Program Manager of the National Science & Technology Education Partnership (NSTEP) in August of 2006, and Vice President in January of 2008. Ms. Cox’s primary role within the non-profit is to manage the existing educational programs while seeking financial support for future endeavors.  Ms. Cox manages the Regional Education Consultants in New York and Chicago as well as the NSTEP Program Analyst. Since Ms. Cox joined NSTEP, she has created training webinars, secured national funding, structured the regional education consultant’s sales strategies and streamlined the TechXplore program.

Prior to working with NSTEP, Ms. Cox was the National Circulation Sales Manager for Education Partnerships with the nation’s newspaper, USA TODAY where she managed a national list of corporate accounts.  Ms. Cox sold the largest account in the paper’s history and created cost-saving procedures. Ms. Cox also worked with Gannett, Inc. to form a new product, Sky Radio, the first live radio on commercial airlines.

Ms. Cox holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism with a minor in Advertising and Public Relations from the University of South Carolina. Ms. Cox is married with three children.

 

Bonnie Freeman, Program Director

Bonnie Freeman joined NSTEP in December 2007 after a career as a commercial real estate lawyer.  Ms. Freeman’s responsibilities at NSTEP include active roles in both the ongoing TechXplore technology competition and in the rollout of the new Study Buddy online tutoring program.

Prior to joining NSTEP, Ms. Freeman was Assistant General Counsel at Host Hotels and Resorts, Inc, the country’s largest lodging real estate investment trust.  While at Host, Ms. Freeman negotiated hotel acquisitions and sales, construction agreements, and both secured and unsecured financings including mortgages, securitized debt and credit agreements.

Ms. Freeman holds a B.A. degree magna cum laude from Brown University in Economics and Urban Studies and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from Duke University School of Law.  She is married with two children.

 

Gregory W. Martin, Education Specialist

Gregory Martin is a graduate of Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.  His work with the National Science and Technology Education Partnership began in June of 2005 where he served as a consultant to and curriculum developer for its XploreMath program.

 
Mr. Martin’s teaching experience is widely diversified between public and private schools, as well as individual tutoring.  He has taught upper level high school mathematics courses in Fairfax County Public Schools and in 2001 co-founded  MGM Tutoring, which he still manages today.  In 2007, MGM Tutoring was named by the Washington Family Magazine one of the top tutoring services in the Washington DC metropolitan area.  He is a mathematics teacher for George Mason University’s Early Identification Program, a college preparation program which focuses on students who will be the first in their family to attend college. 

In addition to remaining active in the mathematics classroom, Mr. Martin has authored several study guides for students and teachers.  He has written student study-workbooks for Algebra I, Trigonometry, and Calculus, as well as numerous teacher technology guides. 


Mr. Martin’s interests include travel, music, and foreign languages.  He is a bilingual German speaker, and has studied Polish, Spanish, and French.  He plays trumpet and piano and is actively pursuing a degree in orchestral conducting.

 

Carmela Dexter, Office Manager

Carmela Dexter became the Executive Assistant to the President of NSTEP in 2004. Her role within NSTEP includes financial analysis, editorial proof reader and general office management.  Prior to her work with NSTEP, Ms. Dexter was a software trainer and manager where she authored dozens of computer training manuals and other educational materials used in training classes for one of the largest property management firms in the country.

Ms. Dexter holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Western Kentucky University and Master of Science Degree from the University of Bridgeport.

 

Ms. Dexter was a Kindergarten classroom teacher as well as music teacher for middle and high school.

Tina Nolan, Regional Education Consultant, Chicago

Tina Nolan has over 15 years experience working in both formal and informal educational settings ranging from museums to schools to universities.  After working as a naturalist educator and a zoo educator, Ms. Nolan accepted a position at the Chicago Academy of Sciences Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum as Coordinator of Interpretive Programs.  Ms. Nolan went on to become Manager of Student and Teacher Programs where she opened the museum’s Harcourt Teacher Leadership Center, began a teacher-in-residence program, and expanded the Academy’s successful teacher training programs.  In 2001, Ms. Nolan became Director of Education where she guided the department through a strategic planning process, coordinated the evaluation of all education programs and projects, put a funding strategy in place to increase the level of federal and donor support, assisted with new exhibit development, and led a staff of over 30 educators and 150 volunteers.

In 2006, Ms., Nolan accepted a position in the College of Education at National Louis University as the Associate Director of Partnerships.  Ms. Nolan’s primary foci include establishing new and innovative partnerships between NLU’s National College of Education and school districts, education reform organizations, and community organizations across the country, and developing and launching the NLU Institute for Urban Education. 

Ms. Nolan has also served on peer review boards for the National Science Foundation and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, Co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee for the National Science Teachers Association conference in 2005, and has presented at regional and national conferences.

Ms. Nolan continues to work with museums and other not-for-profit educational organizations as an independent education consultant. She is working with the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum as a program evaluator and with the National Science and Technology Education Partnership as a regional coordinator for the organization’s TechXplore program.  Ms. Nolan is also engaged with the John G. Shedd Aquarium in multiple capacities.

Ms. Nolan is excited to complete a Masters degree in Educational Leadership this December and has already been accepted as a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership where the focus of her research will be on Ed Leadership in cultural institutions.

 

Stevan Peters, Regional Education Consultant, New York City

Stevan Peters was trained as an engineer.  He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering in addition to his Masters Degrees in Mathematical Scholarship and School Administration and Supervision.  He also earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Peters worked for the New York City Department of Education where he served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant to the superintendent.  He has written curriculum and contributed to national textbooks.

He also taught mathematics, engineering, filmmaking and computer science in several colleges.  He served as the president of the Trump Village Board of Directors, Vice President of the Association of Mathematics Assistant Principals and President of Phi Delta Kappa, the International Education Fraternity.

Since his retirement, he has been working as an educational consultant, training educators across the country.  He mentors school supervisors and teachers as well as consulting for educational publishers.

Steve enjoys reading, playing golf and traveling with his wife and family. He has two children and three grandchildren.
